The following describes my teaching style and the classes I offer
My classes are open level classes suitable for beginners and dancers with some experience. Belly dancing is NOT EASY!! Whilst it is not possible to start from scratch and dance like Shakira in two lessons, students should bear in mind that in the countries of origin belly dancing is a way of life - that means, it is practised continually as part of every day routine. With that in mind, the only way to improve is to KEEP DRILLING THE MOVEMENTS!!!
Each class focuses on a particular style of dance. Over the year, I will explore everything from classical Egyptian Cabaret to Fusion and Tribal styles.
Beginning with a thorough warm-up we stretch all the muscles we are going to use in the class.
We then spend half the class-time drilling movements - beginners need not worry as it is not possible to go over the basics too many times!! My personal focus is on technique and using the muscles to isolate body parts - not to merely mimic or copy movements. I like students to understand how that movement is achieved.
Sometimes we will learn a choreographed piece which might be performed in a local event or one of my dance school shows. At other times we improvise or put together short combinations to get used to performing movements in sequence.
I am particularly keen on East Coast Contemporary Tribal as it focuses on isolations and precision whilst using contemporary music.
I have now split my class into a weekly mixed style class (Monday) and a Tribal class (Thursday). Thursday classes will focus on a yoga style warm up & strict tribal drills followe by a choreography
